I never learned how to read. I just pretend to read. I go to a public space, like a bus, starbucks, or the library, so that other people can see me. I put on my reading glasses, open up my book, and just stare at the words. Every now and then I’ll squint my eyes or nod softly in order to sell the illusion. Sometimes I’ll look out the window and stroke my chin to make it seem like I’m deep in my thoughts. I even go “Hmmmmm, why yes of course indubitably.”
